Green Team Field Volunteer

See something worth improving? Record it.
Location Sheffield / Leeds Area
Hours Completely flexible
Type Volunteer
Team True Observer Green Team

We are building a growing Green Team of volunteers who help us understand how businesses and public-facing organisations operate from the perspective of the people who actually use them.

You don’t need to be deployed somewhere or work scheduled shifts.

Green Team observations can happen naturally while you’re visiting shops, cafés, hotels, leisure facilities and other publicly accessible premises during everyday life.

+

What does a Green Team Volunteer do?

When you notice something that may warrant attention, you can create a field observation through our OPserver system.

This might relate to:

  • Health & safety concerns
  • Customer-facing conditions
  • Accessibility
  • Fire-safety observations
  • CCTV and privacy concerns
  • Signage or public information
  • Maintenance and premises conditions
  • Potential operational or reputational risks
  • Good practice worth recognising

Where appropriate, you may take photographs or other proportionate evidence of what you observed.

Your job is not to decide that a business has broken the law.

You record what you genuinely observed. Our team reviews the evidence and decides whether anything further is appropriate.

You don’t confront businesses

Green Team Volunteers are observers, not enforcement officers or regulatory inspectors.

You will not normally be expected to challenge staff, argue about regulations or tell a business that it has committed a breach.

Where an observation warrants further engagement, it can be escalated to a trained Green Team Leader, who may conduct a separate formal visit and speak with management.

How much time do I have to give?

As much or as little as you want.

There are no shifts and no minimum number of observations.

You might submit something you notice while having lunch, shopping, travelling or visiting somewhere you already intended to go.

Operational rewards

Certain independently reviewed and accepted observations may be eligible for a small operational reward under the Green Team reward scheme.

Rewards recognise useful, evidence-supported contributions and are separate from the voluntary nature of the role. Simply submitting an observation does not automatically qualify for a reward.

Training & progression

Green Team members receive access to guidance and training covering:

  • Field observation
  • Evidence handling
  • OPserver
  • Photography and documentation
  • Privacy and data protection awareness
  • Personal safety and de-escalation
  • Health & safety awareness
  • Reputation and operational risk

Volunteers who demonstrate good judgement and reliability may progress to additional responsibilities within the Green Team.

Who are we looking for?

You don’t need previous investigation or security experience.

We’re particularly interested in people who are observant, curious, responsible and capable of separating what they actually saw from what they think might have happened .

If you’re the sort of person who notices things other people walk straight past, we’d like to hear from you.

Customer Service Assistant

Be the first point of contact for True Observer.
Location Sheffield / Remote
Hours Flexible weekday availability
Type Mini Job
Pay £12–£14 / hour

We are looking for a reliable and confident person to provide friendly customer service support and act as a professional first point of contact for our clients, businesses, volunteers and members of the public.

This is a small, flexible role designed to fit around studies, another job or other commitments.

The role can include answering incoming calls, responding to simple enquiries and recording messages during agreed periods of availability. It is designed to fit around studies, another job or other commitments.

+

What you’ll do

You’ll help provide a friendly and professional first response to people contacting True Observer.

Depending on the enquiry, you may:

  • Answer incoming calls and general enquiries about True Observer
  • Take messages and contact details
  • Respond to straightforward customer service enquiries
  • Identify what the person needs and direct the enquiry to the appropriate team
  • Record relevant information accurately
  • Arrange for a team member to follow up where necessary
  • Follow our customer service, call-handling and privacy procedures

You won’t be expected to know the answer to everything. We’ll provide guidance on common enquiries and clear instructions on when an enquiry should simply be recorded and passed to somebody else.

How does it work?

There are no guaranteed weekly hours and no fixed shifts.

Availability is agreed in advance. You can tell us which periods you are able to cover and we’ll arrange customer service cover around the needs of the organisation.

The role is intended to provide occasional, flexible work rather than a traditional full-time customer service schedule.

Pay

The role pays £12–£14 per hour, depending on experience and the responsibilities undertaken.

Where availability arrangements differ from normal hourly work, the applicable payment and expectations will always be agreed with you in advance.

We’re looking for someone who is

  • Friendly, confident and professional when dealing with people
  • Reliable during agreed availability periods
  • Comfortable communicating with different types of people by phone or message
  • Able to take accurate messages and record information
  • Comfortable using a smartphone and basic online systems
  • Able to communicate clearly in English
  • Discreet when handling information
  • At least 18 years old

Additional languages, particularly Spanish or German, would be an advantage but are not required.

Previous customer service or call-centre experience is not required. Good communication, reliability and judgement are more important to us.

Training & support

We’ll provide guidance before you start, including:

  • How True Observer works
  • Common types of enquiries
  • Customer service and call-handling procedures
  • Taking and recording messages
  • Privacy and data protection awareness
  • When and how to escalate a call

You’ll always have a clear route for passing an enquiry to the appropriate person rather than being expected to resolve everything yourself.

Interested?
