Thoughts About Your Future (As An Employee or Volunteer) at True Observer
I wanted to take a moment to address something that a few of you may be quietly wondering. I was scrolling Youtube shorts the other day, and Elon Musk popped up saying this: “If AI is evolving so quickly (like we saw in our last session)… does a project like True Observer or similar agencies still have a future?” Well… my gut says “yes”. True Observer isn’t about doing what AI does better and faster. We saw processes and analysis done in a matter of seconds. And we are not yet a multinational with unlimited capital to invest in R&D. Imagine what those are doing right now and what will be able to do soon. Wow… What we do is far more genuine. It’s about interpreting human behaviour, recognising manipulation, understanding cultural context, and taking responsibility for the accuracy and ethics of what we report. That’s the creative side of this work. The right-brain thinking I’m so passionate about. AI can support us, for sure. It can and should accelerate some processes, and help us filter information faster… But it cannot (yet):
  • certify a chain of custody
  • assess reputational meaning in the real world
  • understand the emotional impact of online harassment
  • judge intent, nuance or cultural subtext
  • take legal responsibility for evidence
That part will always require human judgement, empathy, and integrity. That’s exactly what you bring to this project. True Observer doesn’t want to compete with AI. We are planning to take you to a journey where all of us will become aware of that human layer that keeps AI accountable. The “verification standard” (let’s call it that way) that organisations, journalists, courts and victims can trust. Your role as volunteers and future agents is not disappearing, but evolving. You are not here to do repetitive tasks that machines can replicate. You are here to validate, interpret and give meaning to what machines cannot understand. And that difference is everything. Thank you for staying committed, curious and ethical in a moment where the world needs exactly that. You are all doing amazingly well. It makes me very happy to see you wanting to be part of it. It truly does. If you ever have doubts, reach out. We are in this together.
